OUR STORY
Back in 2008, Shazia A. Khan with the help of her father started a small school for pre-primary and primary grades in Block 3, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Karachi. She heard reports of kidnapping and sexual abuse of young girls and boys in the area. She started providing free schooling to underprivileged children in the evening in the same school. Later on, in 2012, Shazia Khan due to unavoidable circumstances, decided to turn the school into an NGO called AAB- the need of life. The NGO was registered in 2012.
The area in which the ‘Minerva’ school and office is situated has many slum areas. The area is a densely populated area with mostly migrants from South Punjab, Siraikis, Memon, Pathans, Balochs and Sindhis. The area starts from ‘Haji Lemon Goth and touches the end of Sarahb Goth, Karachi. Sarahb Goth is the area that has been under reports of possible Taliban hide outs in Karachi. There is domestic violence, drugs, prostitution, kidnappings and local alcohol distribution, ethnic violence etc. Due to presence of small gangs, the police do not want to do anything about the alarming situation in the area. Over the past 5 years, the area has seen a lot of sexual abuse of young girls, most of them found strangled to death. The main reason is that young children in the area do not attend school due to extreme poverty, they play around in the streets or work at shops/homes, hence falling prey.
She has been trying hard to make a difference in the lives of the underprivileged and abused children. AAB- the need of life and its project school 'Minerva Education System' is her gift to the numerous poor and abused children, who live in the slums, near her school. They could not study in good schools due to poverty and disregard for education. She admitted them in her school free of cost and provides them with books, stationary and uniforms. She convinced their parents to stop sending their children to work and admit them in her school for free. The school runs in two shifts in order to support as many kids as possible. Currently, there are 350 students enrolled in the school. Some parents pay a small amount of school fees in order to keep their integrity. The school teachers and staff salaries are supported by these fees and by local donations.
The parents of the students in her school, did not just had a disregard for education, they also are not bothered about the well-being of their children. They hardly remember their date of birth; most parents have 8 to 9 children. Some leave their children with relatives, who at times sexually abused them. Shazia has dealt with every matter with utmost care and provided guidance.
This was just the beginning of her journey, the school shift to a bigger place one block away, in 2012 after the establishment of the NGO. Since then, Shazia has been conducting various activities to serve the community. The mission of AAB is not only to provide education but also to promote human rights education and health services. AABs website, www.aab-theneedoflife.com, was launched in September 2012. To spread the word about her cause AABs face book page was also created.
Being a teacher trainer, she trains her teachers so that they can teach the school students in the best manner possible with special emphasis on human rights education, life skills and global education. Every year/ term, new teachers are provided training in the school.
