MINERVA EDUCATION SYSTEM
A Project of AAB
The school was started by Shazia A. Khan in March 2008 with the name of Minerva Montessori & Elementary School with good learning aids and equipment on commercial bases. She already had been giving free tuitions to many underprivileged children in her home, hence wanted to do more for them. She opened free schooling for children from the slum areas of Gulshan-e-Iqbal, in the same school building, in the evening. Most of these underprivileged children were abused either physically or sexually abused; therefore, they were financially and morally supported by the school, and their parent’s counselled on proper parenting and human rights. Soon the school received many requests to enroll more free students. Therefore, in July 2012 the school shifted to a bigger two floored building. The school is now a proper school for underprivileged children from Montessori to grade 8.
The area for the past few years has been tore with violence, drug abuse, sexual abuse of children and domestic violence. The area has seen a lot of sexual abuse of young children, most of them found strangled to death. The main reason is that young children in the area do not attend school due to extreme poverty, hence falling prey.
The aim of the school is to promote maximum enrolment in the school, leading to the elimination of sexual violence/child labour in the area and increasing the well-being and value of the girl child. The main goal is to get these children out of the streets and give them a safe place to study and get healthcare facilities. As well as make the entire area surrounding the school, fully aware of their educational needs, health, human rights and their civil rights.
Shazia says “We want to help build a stable Pakistan, play our role in the community of Gulshan-e-Iqbal. Hopefully spread out and open more small schools in the area. The violence, abuse and child labour will only stop with awareness and education.”
